Post Grad Options on my first days of Junior Year

Lately I’ve been doing a lot of thinking in terms of my future beyond SU. Two more years and it’s goodbye undergrad, and hello future and bunch of loans that need to be paid off. I don’t have a clean cut plan or goal like most of my friends. I don’t have that “I’m going to Pharmacy school after undergrad!” or “I’m gonna become a nurse!” kind of clear view of what I want to do for the rest of my life. To be completely honest, I’m still on the search for what I really want to do. I don’t even know if what I’m doing right now is my true calling. For quite some time I’ve had an interest in advertising and PR, but sometimes I question whether that’s really something I want to do.

After doing some thinking I’ve come down to a couple of different plans beyond SU:

  1. Remain in Seattle and find employment in a local advertising company. I really like the city of Seattle so I may stay here.
  2. Be ambitious and find a job in New York. New York is the heart of fashion, entertainment and business. I also found out that a lot of PR and Advertising firms are there.
  3. Go back to Japan and find employment there. My friend Risa who just graduated from SU is currently doing that. The job market is tough for her as well. I know I can probably join my dad’s current company if I wanted to. They really need English correspondence. Do I really want to work with my dad though? It’s not even a family business…. Not too sure.
  4. Do the JET Program: teaching in Japan for a couple of years doesn’t sound bad at all. It actually sounds pretty fun and I have Dohwa to thank for introducing me to the insight on the program.
  5. Go back to Japan and enter announcing school at either FujiTV, TBS, or NihonTV. News anchor and television host jobs interest me. You get to meet all kinds of people and get to experience some cool things too! Oh and you can also be on TV :)
  6. (this one’s actually VERY new) Go to Grad School. For the longest time I wasn’t sure if there were graduate programs for Strategic Communication and PR related things. But there actually are!  I coincidentally ran into some information about it while reading my class articles. I’m not sure where I’m gonna apply but if I’m fortunate enough to afford Grad School I wanna try. At this point, with little research, I am thinking of Columbia University. I can kill two birds with one stone. Go to New York and get hired while I continuing my education with a part time graduate program at Columbia.

So those are my post grad thoughts, options and ideas as of right now. Junior year just started but I just know things are going to creep up!
